According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of medical admin assistant jobs available over the next several years is expected to grow faster than the average occupation over the next several years. Therefore, if you are interested in working in this field, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty with finding a job after you have earned your degree. But, what can you expect from a medical admin assistant job and why is this a good career path to pursue?
Although all medical admin assistant jobs are not the same, you can expect to perform some of the same basic duties regardless of where you are employed. As the title implies, your role as a medical admin assistant is to assist the physician or medical professional with performing administrative duties. Therefore, you should not be asked to perform clinical duties such as taking blood pressure or otherwise working directly with patients to help them with their medical needs. Rather, when it comes to medical admin assistant jobs, the duties involve completing paperwork, answering phone calls and making appointments.
While the duties of the medial admin assistant may seem a bit simple on the surface, the reality is that people who hold medical admin assistant jobs need to be proficient in using a variety of different software applications. This includes database, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software. A medical admin assistant may also be required to be proficient in using medical transcription software, as medical admin assistant jobs typically involve transcribing information for patient records.
Since medical admin assistants need to be able to update and maintain patient records, they need to be knowledgeable about medical terminology and other aspects of the health care industry. This includes areas such as medical billing and medical insurance. By gaining a better understanding of these aspects of the medial field, medical admin assistants can more effectively perform the duties that are involved in their job.
In order to give yourself a better chance of obtaining a medical admin assistant job, you might want to consider working toward obtaining certification in the field. In addition to obtaining general administrative assistant certification, it is a good idea to obtain certification that is specifically in the medical admin assistant field. Although becoming certified isn’t legally required in order to find a job in the field, many employers do require their applicants to become certified. Even among those that do not require certification, those candidates who are certified do generally have a competitive edge over those who do not.

Therefore, before accepting one of the medical admin assistant jobs that are available, it is important to carefully read through the job description in order to make certain the job is what you are expecting.
